Family Management Support and Child Self Management Support

Goal:  Support families to manage the health and health care of their children

 

Support children to assume developmentally appropriate self management skills and responsibilities

Tips:

  • Prepare families so they are active partners in and advocates for their child’s healthcare; emphasize the family’s role in managing their child’s well being and illness
  • Incorporate relevant cultural healing traditions and beliefs into patient care and communication
  • Provide linguistically effective care at all points of contact
  • Use effective, culturally sensitive and developmentally appropriate self-management support strategies [1]
  • Build effective alliances with the family, being sensitive to family weight related issues [2]
  • Encourage healthy behaviors for parents (modeling)

 


[1] Effective self-management includes: assessment, goal setting, action planning, problem and follow up.

[2] This may entail training of providers on strategies for raising the topic of overweight.
