What to Expect When You Are Improving

Welcome to your QI Journey

Hello and welcome to the What To Expect When You Are Improving course with the National Institute of Children’s Health Quality or NICHQ, as we refer to ourselves.  For over 25 years, NICHQ has been guided by a profound passion for every child to achieve their optimal health. We are leaders in change management, with a strong foundation in quality improvement methods to improve maternal and child health. We are excited to share with you what we have learned working with multidisciplinary teams of health experts, community partners, practitioners, and families to define complex problems and design rigorous, data-driven strategies that deliver impact now – and for the future. In What to Expect When You Are Improving, you will learn how to approach the challenges you are facing, with an improvement mindset, the right people, and the right tools.

This course is a self-paced, online course, divided into two 40-minute sections that will allow you to work on your own schedule and at your own speed. Throughout this course, you will follow one case study: a clinic working to reduce long patient wait-times. This single story will serve as the “throughline” that connects each module. You will learn how each quality improvement (QI) concept is applied in that clinic, and then you’ll be invited to connect the same ideas to your own improvement goals. Whether you are setting out to make a personal improvement, lead a work-related improvement or were selected to join a quality improvement team, you are in the right place.  When you finish What to Expect When You Are Improving, you’ll have a clearer understanding of how improvement science works and how to approach making things better. You’ll leave with the confidence and foundation you need to begin your quality improvement project. Let’s begin this journey together.
