NICHQ Commends Washington Leadership on Healthcare Reform Legislation

Boston, MA, March 31, 2010—The National Initiative for Children’s Healthcare Quality (NICHQ) today applauded President Obama and the U.S. Congress for the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The bill expands healthcare coverage, providing insurance to millions of uninsured children and also has many provisions to strengthen health system performance. In keeping with NICHQ’s current aims and work, we note the bill’s:

  • Appropriation of substantial resources for:
    • Healthcare innovation,
    • Quality measurement and improvement, and
    • Prevention, including funds for Childhood Obesity Demonstration projects.
  • Facilitating better transition to adulthood by allowing children to stay on their parent’s insurance plan through the age of 26.
  • Continuation of the CHIP program through 2019 and commitment to improve Medicaid pediatric primary care and specialty payment, thereby enhancing access.

“As an organization dedicated to improving the quality of healthcare for children across the nation, we are thrilled about the passage of this legislation,” said Charles Homer MD, MPH, President and CEO of NICHQ. “For too long, too many children did not have access to the healthcare they need. This bill will enhance the quality of care for kids across the U.S.  so we can assure parents their children are truly well  cared for in the American healthcare system.”
