Addressing Disparities in Childhood Obesity
Thanks for your support of this Q-Call
Although social economic status (SES) gradients in obesity among adults are recognized, the relationship between SES and obesity in childhood and adolescence is not consistent. Why is this so, when childhood and adolescent obesity are such important predictors of adult obesity? This call will explore these relationships as well as possible reasons for these inconsistencies, including how disparities and SES is conceptualized and measured. This call will also explore within and across state patterns of disparities in obesity prevalence. Finally, a set of goals and recommendations are proposed for how to respond to these prevailing disparities.

Learning Objectives
After this Q-Call, you will be able to:
- Understand the term "disparity" compared to "difference" as well as the distinction between "social class" and "socioeconomic status"
- Understand how the differences in these concepts relate to childhood obesity
- Recognize pathways through which social disadvantage can create disparities in obesity and CVD risk
- Be aware of the degree of cross-state and within-state variations in overweight and obesity among subgroups
- Understand the implications of these within and cross state variations for program development and improvement opportunities to address these disparities
