Upcoming Q-Call
Using Focus Groups to Develop a Multi-Ethnic Adolescent Obesity Prevention Program
Thursday, November 12 at 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. EST
Online registration for this event.
This presentation offers valuable new knowledge to pediatricians and other health care providers interested in addressing the problem of overweight/obesity among adolescents. The focus groups provide insights into how adolescent girls, the majority of whom are Latino and African American, perceive body image and weight-related issues, their attitudes toward eating and exercise as well as the barriers they experience in accessing physical activity and healthy nutrition. This information could be useful to others concerned with reducing racial/ethnic disparities through development of innovative, culturally sensitive health promotion/obesity prevention programs for adolescents. They are also useful to programs focusing on increasing access to medical homes, especially for older adolescents from low-income families who lose insurance coverage at age 19.
Learning Objectives
After this Call, you will be able to:
- Identify and recognize typical barriers to physical activity and healthy eating experienced by low-income, multi-ethnic adolescents in an urban high
- Identify specific strategies/interventions appropriate for promoting healthy eating/physical activity/leadership development among teens
- Determine whether applying a "portfolio" of services would be feasible in your community
