Advocacy Training

Key leaders at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Academy of Pediatrics came to believe that pediatricians were an untapped resource in the effort to influence local and national policies to better support the fight against childhood obesity. Collectively, they sought to develop a series of national resources and a training curriculum to support the engagement and training of healthcare professionals to become advocates for obesity prevention within their communities.

Through a phased approach, we worked with seven sites across the country to develop and test training materials, then established a robust, interactive, online training module to train healthcare professionals nationwide. Over the course of 4 years, we trained healthcare organizations in Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina and Texas to establish baseline advocacy skills and develop targeted implementation plans for spreading the advocacy skills in their communities.

  • More than 350 participants have participated in advocacy trainings and have gone on to advance policies to support healthier communities across the country.
