We make meaningful change. Every day.
For 20 years, NICHQ (pronounced 'nitch-cue') has been guided by a profound passion for every child to achieve optimal health. We’ve made it our sole mission to drive dramatic and sustainable changes in the complex health issues facing children and their families. You could say we embody change. We know how to create pathways and partnerships, get real traction on tough issues, and bring the right people and capabilities together to transform systems for better health outcomes. As a bold organization of innovative thinkers and doers, we are particularly proud to have earned a reputation as a national leader for improving the health and well-being of children and their families. Meeting our mission requires partners. We work with states, communities, public health agencies, hospitals and families to improve children’s health. By creating partnerships, encouraging collaboration and providing data-driven technical assistance, NICHQ supports the different stakeholders who, together, impact the systems underlying children’s health. The NICHQ Difference
We challenge conventional thinking while never losing sight of practical solutions. We are hands on all the way. By bringing the best methods and tools for change and combining them with a high-touch collaborative approach for learning, teaching and adoption, we make the impossible possible. At the core of our success is extraordinary teamwork and a keen ability to genuinely listen to enable individuals and organizations to work for continuous improvement. Read about our Impact >
What Makes Us Unique?
Sure, there are others out there working to improve children’s health outcomes—we are likely partnering with them because no single entity can do it alone. What makes NICHQ unique is:
- We use a highly rigorous, yet flexible approach to systems change.
- We use evidence-based and data-driven strategies in program design (check out one of our project driver diagrams).
- Our collaborative approach brings stakeholders and uncommon partners to the table.

What People Say
For me, NICHQ is uniquely positioned to support complex, system-based efforts to improve child health and healthcare, locally and on a national scale. NICHQ helped my teams succeed by supporting collaboration, information management, and continuous learning. With NICHQ's help, the whole of our work was much greater than the sum of each of our individual efforts!
NICHQ provided me with the requisite foundation to conduct meaningful quality improvement that drives sustainable change...Collaborating with NICHQ on sickle cell disease has been hugely rewarding and highly productive. The leadership and staff at NICHQ have great vision and clear follow-through. They genuinely listen to their partners. They are receptive to different perspectives, and they always put the unique needs of children at the forefront of their work.
Through the Infant Mortality CoIIN, NICHQ has found effective ways to engage all states around six areas of effort to reduce infant mortality and improve birth outcomes. With the support of NICHQ staff and expert consultants, state maternal child health leaders are learning to use traditional quality improvement and innovative approaches to maximize the leadership roles, and to use a health equity lens in this work.
Although I work with data every day, NICHQ gave me the tools to look at data through a different lens in order to support change and improve quality for newborn screening.
