Support Safe Sleep for All

Racial disparities in sleep-related infant deaths persist, with black babies dying at twice the rate of white babies. We can change those numbers by remembering these two principles:

  1. Conversations count. Helping all families understand safe sleep guidelines starts with better conversations. Here are more than a dozen strategies and tactics to support those efforts.

  2. Pictures have power. Unsafe images of babies sleeping confuse families and caregivers. Find photos that are safe-sleep-friendly in this image gallery.

Bridge the Breastfeeding Gap

Improving exclusive breastfeeding rates for Hispanic mothers can help address breastfeeding disparities across the country. Here are three ideas to tap:

  • Find community champions: Friends and relatives who breastfeed are powerful resources for new mothers in minority communities.
  • Get digital: Online forums and social networking sites can connect new mothers with other mothers who speak their language, share their background and breastfeed.
  • Clarify communications: Enlist a native speaker to check all translated resources so that they are accurate and address cultural linguistic preferences.
